A Live Battlefield Walk Just for You!

Culloden Battlefield for Armchair Travellers: On 16th April 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite Army took their last stand to reclaim the throne of Britain. Although the Jacobites had been successful in the previous battles of this conflict, their mission at Culloden was doomed to failure from the very start. Let us take you back to the cold and windy day of the battle on our live battlefield walk. The weather won’t be of any concern to you though - you’ll be joining us from the warmth and comfort of your home.

We start our tour with an introduction to the Jacobites, their cause and their previous attempts to reclaim the throne of Britain. We will look at the preceding events of the ‘45 and at some of the iconic locations where these events took place, before we start our live tour of the Battlefield: It was a cold and windy day on Drumossie Moor, where two very different armies had lined up on their front lines: The hungry, tired and disorganised Jacobites were facing a well-fed and well-trained Government Army commanded by the Duke of Cumberland, a distant cousin of Bonnie Prince Charlie who led the Jacobites.

We will stand on the Government Frontline where you will hear about the two armies, their tactics and the course of the short but bloody battle. Just a few steps from the frontline, there is a well which now bears the name ''Well of the Dead''. This is also where a rather tragic love story unfolded and we will take a short virtual detour to tell you this story. We then make our way to the clan markers and the Clan Fraser stone. At the Memorial Cairn, you will hear about the aftermath of the battle and of Flora Macdonald, our national heroine and a remarkable woman.

Past the rather bluntly described ''Field of the English'', we head to Leanach Cottage, where you will hear of Belle Macdonald, the last inhabitant of this lovely heather-thatched building that served as a field hospital during the battle. We then go back to the Visitors Centre to have a close look at the memorial wall and to end our tour with a poem or a ghost story.
