Culloden, Clava & Cawdor

Explore the ''Big Three'' East of Inverness on a compact half day tour that can easily be turned into a full day out by spending more time in the seaside town of Nairn and adding a few more Cs: Coffee, cake, crab and coast - just to name a few of them.

We start our tour with a drive to Culloden Battlefield, the site of the last pitched battle on British soil, where Bonnie Prince Charlie took his last stand to reclaim the throne of Britain. On a walking tour across the battlefield, we take you back to the 16th April 1746 and tell you about the short but bloody battle, its aftermath and of a young woman who died of a broken heart. No visit to the Highlands would be complete without an encounter with our hairy and loveable Highland cows. A few of them live right next to the battlefield.

Our next stop takes us even further back in time:

The Clava Cairns, mysterious burial chambers from the Bronze Age, are set within a beautiful spot on the banks of the River Nairn, not far from the impressive Nairn Viaduct. From here, we take the back road and stop at a very special place en route, before heading to Cawdor Castle, home to the Campbells of Cawdor since the 14th century and also famous for its literary connection to Shakespeare's Macbeth.

We take a stroll through the magnificent gardens

with a labyrinth and majestic sequoias and you will hear about the sometimes rather turbulent family history while admiring the castle from the outside. Past a few more Highland Cows and another local gem, we then head to the seaside town of Nairn, once the ''Brighton of the North'', where you get some time to put your feet into the sand. If you like it here as much as we do, you may wish to spend some extra time in town on your own. Otherwise, we take you back to your accommodation.
