A storied past
Originally opened in 1925, the Playhouse began its life as a 700-seat cinema and occasional music hall, reflecting the entertainment trends of the early 20th century. It operated successfully for several decades before closing its doors in 1979.
However, the building was given a new lease on life when the NTC Touring Theatre Company acquired it. They transformed the ground floor into a functional space, and in 1990, the upper floor was leased to the Alnwick District Playhouse Trust, which led to the full reopening of the refurbished Playhouse. Since then, it has remained a cherished venue for the arts
A Hub for the Arts
Today, the Alnwick Playhouse is more than just a theatre. It houses:
- A main stage and auditorium with seating for over 200 people.
- A bar area beneath the auditorium, offering a relaxed space for socialising.
- A foyer, box office, workshop, and NTC Touring Company offices on the ground floor.
- A black box theatre-style performance and rehearsal space, ideal for intimate productions and community events
