On the doorstep of Snowdonia National Park is a tranquil lake, kept full by a magnificent and beautiful dam.

The dam at Alwen Reservoir provides water to the town of Birkenhead and is one of the most beautiful buildings in this area.

It’s so grand that you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a castle when you first lay eyes on it!

Paired with the lake and the nearby woodlands, Alwen Reservoir really is an idyllic and relaxing place to spend a day out.

A dam good trip

Built in the early 20th century, the reservoir and dam were installed when the conifer forests around the lake were planted after the First World War.

All of this led to Alwen Reservoir becoming a place of staggering beauty, and it remains that way today - we’re sure the scenery will mesmerise you as you explore.

Wonderful walks

The walking trail around Alwen Reservoir will take you through dense woodlands, over moors, and along the edge of the lovely reservoir.

Stretching for almost seven miles, it’s a trail that'll give you plenty of exercise without overstaying its welcome.

As you stroll, look out for the distant mountains of Snowdonia, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in all of Britain.

Part of the trail is pathed while the rest is off the beaten track through the forest.

Along the way, there are plenty of signs detailing the local history and wildlife, and you might even get lucky enough to spot some of the birds who live here like grouse and cuckoos.

Try and catch a rare glimpse of the red squirrels or ospreys that call this place home too.

Pop over to Llyn Brenig

You can easily walk to another reservoir nearby called Llyn Brenig, where you'll find a visitor centre, café, and toilets - an ideal place to stop off once you’re done exploring Alwen.

If you’re a fan of fishing, you can buy a ticket and see if you can reel something in from the water, or you can zoom around the walking trail on a bike.
