Who is Banksy?
With the graffiti artist distinguishing himself amongst others through the use of rat stencils, political statements and powerful murals on prominent locations, Banksy has become famous worldwide for challenging authority with his witty and provocative pieces.
A few theories on the street artist's anonymity:
- Bristol-born 'trip hop' band Massive Attack are believed to have inspired Banksy; lead singer Robert Del Naja is also West Country-based and a successful artist known as '3D'
- Although Robert Del Naja denies being Banksy, he does claim to know the real identity of the street artist
- Due to being identified in photos of the artworks, recreational artist Robert Gunningham is another theory, with schoolmates encouraging the hearsay
- Potentially the most bizarre theory is linking Banksy to 2007 Art Attack's Neil Buchanan - although Buchanan has denied he is the elusive graffiti artist.
- Many theorise that Banksy could be a Bristol-based art collective rather than an individual person due to the efficiency in which his pieces are created
- Most recently, a forgotten Banksy BBC interview from 2003 has resurfaced. In the interview, Banksy is asked if he is called 'Robert Banks' and the artist replies "It's Robbie"
Banksy's elusive identity is part of the artists trademark. However, to keep a long story short - no-one knows who Banksy is, except his closest family, friends and associates.
