Discover centuries of history in the Bannockburn House grounds
Your volunteer guide will lead you through a landscape filled with remarkable stories. Walk along the historic Fountain Walk, passing a cast-iron fountain installed by Steven in 1888 and veteran lime trees that have stood on the estate for more than 300 years.
You'll visit the award-winning apiary and learn about the estate's ongoing environmental initiatives before standing beneath one of the estate's most impressive features, The Five Sisters. These magnificent Giant Redwood trees were planted by John McLaren, a Bannockburn native who began his gardening career here before travelling to America, where he later helped create San Francisco's world-famous Golden Gate Park.
The tour also explores the estate's industrial past, including stories of local coal mining and the recent discovery of a medieval coal mine on the estate.
Heritage, horticulture and community
The gardens are more than a beautiful backdrop to Bannockburn House. They are a thriving community project where volunteers grow produce, support local food banks and help preserve the estate's heritage for future generations.
Depending on seasonal availability, visitors may even have the opportunity to purchase fresh vegetables, rhubarb, blackcurrants and locally produced honey from the estate's produce stall.
