Discover 850 years of history on your day out in Gloucestershire's Berkeley Castle

Did you know Berkeley Castle contains archives that date back to the 12th century? To this day, the castle holds estate and administrative documents that lead back to the death of William, Marquess of Berkeley in 1492.

Before you check them out, explore the remains of the castle’s double-drawbridge, invented in medieval times to keep the enemy away and help protect the castle gates.

Imagine the soldiers using their strength to heave the drawbridge up as they were threatened by approaching invaders.

It’s believed that during her stay at Berkeley Castle, Queen Elizabeth I played bowls as a form of entertainment in the bowling green area. Feel the sun beaming down as you gaze at the same view Queen Elizabeth would have seen years ago, surrounded by the fragrance of fresh flowers.

What to expect from the beautiful Berkeley Castle:

  • Explore the remains of the castle’s double-drawbridge, invented in medieval times to keep the enemy away and help protect the castle gates.Enter the magical and mesmerising gardens of this stunning, enchanted fortress, admiring the flourishing flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees.
  • If after all that exploring, you’ve built up an appetite, head to the brand new Kitchen Garden restaurant, serving scrumptious lunches, afternoon teas and treats to delight! Tuck into seasonal treats and locally sourced foods that’ll tickle your tastebuds.
  • You can even take a stroll to the luxurious lily pond that was originally built as a swimming pool for the 8th Earl of Berkeley. You can just picture the Earl lounging near the then swimming pool, as you unwind by the ornamental lily pond, listening to birds chirp and the water from the fountain flow gracefully.
  • Check out the estate and administrative documents that lead back to the death of William, Marquess of Berkeley in 1492.

This is a Norman Castle retaining many of its original features. As a result, there is limited wheelchair access due to the many steps, staircases and uneven floors throughout the Castle and gardens.

For those who feel the initial 24 stone steps of the Keep may be unmanageable, a shorter route through the Castle is available, avoiding this flight of steps, but other steps and stairs will need to be negotiated

There is no access to the Grade 1 listed Castle with children's pushchairs or buggies, because of the many steps and uneven floors. The Guide at the foot of the steps to the Keep will keep an eye on your child's buggy.
