Taking place on Saturday 24th January 2026, this popular winter event offers a rare chance to experience steam locomotives in action, explore behind the scenes, and enjoy a relaxed day out for all ages.
New Year's Steam Up highlights:
- One of the highlights of the day is exclusive access to the Engine Shed, open for viewing throughout the event. Railway custodian Bill Best, alongside the railway’s Head Engineer, will host an engaging tour and talk, giving visitors a closer look at individual engines and the fascinating stories behind them
- You’ll also hear about recent updates, repairs, and restoration projects, including work on the historic Garforth Station footbridge (circa 1900) and the Brouhot portable engine, freshly retubed over the winter
- Steam locomotives will be running throughout the day, offering passenger rides along the line and the unmistakable sights, sounds, and smells of steam in winter. It’s a must for railway enthusiasts and a magical experience for first-time visitors alike
- The Winter Steam-Up isn’t just for grown-up train fans. Children can enjoy the large model railway, along with the ever-popular train play table, making it a welcoming and engaging day out for families too
