About Nine Sixteenths at Brixton House

In 2004, the Super Bowl halftime show sparked global controversy when Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson’s breast for just nine-sixteenths of a second. The aftermath was seismic. A global pop icon and outspoken ally to the LGBTQ community saw her career derailed - whilst Timberlake’s flourished, exposing a powerful double standard in media, race, and gender.

Nine Sixteenths interrogates that moment and everything that followed. Who benefited from the backlash? Who controls the media narrative? And what does this reveal about how Black women’s bodies are scrutinised, policed and punished in the public eye?

The Malfunction, The Aftermath and The Reclamation

Structured across three acts - The Malfunction, The Aftermath and Reclamation - the show blends devised theatre, dance and lip sync to explore representation, gender, race and power. With a sharp sense of humour and a strong vein of nostalgia for the early 2000s, the production also centres the hopes, dreams and lived experiences of four Black female performers.

Vibrant, confrontational and celebratory, Nine Sixteenths reframes a cultural flashpoint through the voices of those most affected - reclaiming agency, joy and visibility.
