About Akram Khan’s Giselle
As the performance begins, shadowy figures press against an imposing wall, setting the tone for a production that is as visually arresting as it is emotionally charged. From the very first moment, this bold reinterpretation of the classic ballet grips the audience with its haunting imagery and raw intensity.
Akram Khan’s choreography is both hypnotic and visceral, weaving together classical ballet and contemporary movement to tell a story of love, betrayal, and redemption in a world marked by division and despair.
The stage is transformed into a desolate, industrial landscape—an abandoned factory haunted by restless spirits—brought to life through the evocative lighting design of Mark Henderson and the monumental set by Oscar-winning designer Tim Yip.
Vincenzo Lamagna’s thunderous score, a dark and dramatic reworking of Adolphe Adam’s original composition, is performed live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic, amplifying the emotional depth and urgency of the narrative.
