About Giselle
At the heart of the story is Giselle, a gentle village girl whose innocence and joy are shattered when she falls in love with Albrecht, a man who is not what he seems. Believing him to be a humble suitor, she gives her heart freely, only to discover that he is already betrothed to another. The revelation devastates her, and in her despair she succumbs to madness and death.
But Giselle’s journey does not end there. In the moonlit second act, she enters the realm of the Wilis—spirits of young women betrayed by their lovers, condemned to rise from their graves and dance men to death. Here, the ballet shifts from pastoral romance to eerie supernatural drama, as Giselle must confront her own heartbreak while Albrecht faces the terrifying consequences of his betrayal.
What makes Giselle so enduring is not only its dramatic narrative but also its emotional depth. Themes of love, loss, forgiveness, and redemption are woven together with exquisite choreography, transporting audiences from rustic village life to a spectral forest glimmering with ghostly figures.
Wright’s staging heightens the contrast between the warmth of Act I and the chilling beauty of Act II, ensuring that every moment resonates with poignancy and power.
