Hackney Empire's History

Built in 1901 as a music hall, the Hackney Empire hosted legends that we all know and love today, such as Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel and Julie Andrews. It would become a bingo hall in the 1960's and by the 1980's was truly London's hub for alternative comedy and stand-up, with such visitors as Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Ben Elton, John Cleese, Lenny Henry and Frankie Boyle. 

Today, the Hackney Empire remains a central zone for British comedy and also as a venue for some of the best showings on offer in the world of live entertainment. Having now been in operation for over 120 years, the Hackney Empire is undoubtedly one of the West End's must-visit theatres.

By Train:

The closest station is Hackney Central (a 5-minute walk). It has regular trains to Highbury and Islington (Victoria line), Stratford (Central line), and West Hampstead (Jubilee line).
Bethnal Green (Central Line) is a short bus ride away.
Hackney Downs (a 10-minute walk) has trains going to Liverpool Street, Chingford, Cheshunt, and Enfield Town.
London Fields (a 12-minute walk) also has trains going to Liverpool Street. Hackney Empire is within Oyster Card Zone 21.

By Bus:

The closest bus stop is Hackney Town Hall, which is less than 1 minute from Hackney Empire. Buses that stop there include: 30, 55, 106, 236 (24hr), 254, 276, 277 (24hr), 394, N55, N253, N277 & W15.
