Hamsterley Forest

You’ll love the variety of activities

Ready to explore your new family adventure spot? Hamsterley Forest is a retreat full of captivating experiences for you all to create precious memories.

Enjoy the thrilling atmosphere as you leave the car with backpacks and essentials in tow, filled with adrenaline and excited butterflies.

There are 2,000 hectares in total to explore here – be sure to check out the walking trails map online to see where your trek within gorgeous landscapes will take you.

Let's find Gruffalo!

We think the kids, in particular, will love the Gruffalo Spotters trail, where they’ll get to see if they can spot different wildlife with the help of their favourite characters via the Gruffalo Spotter 2 app.

Download the app before arriving at Hamsterley Forest so it’s ready to go, and pick up an activity kit filled with stickers, crayons, and a Gruffalo mask at the Visitor Information Point.

Perhaps after all the fun you’d like to practice the technique of mindfulness?

You’ll notice panels dotted along the forest’s Wellbeing Trail, which suggest you stop at certain times to connect with the tranquil environment around you.

It’s the perfect opportunity to switch off the mobile and fully experience the beautiful surrounding nature.

Time for a delightful picnic

Now’s the time you’ve probably been thinking about for a little while during the fun-filled day out.

Dig out the selection of homemade treats and refreshing drinks as you take in the stunning scenery at one of the picnic areas, mesmerised by the sounds of rustling trees and singing birds.

We suggest taking a few extra moments after you’re done eating to bask in the fresh woodland scents, listening to nature at its finest before moving on to some more exciting adventures.

It’s playtime!

The kids will want to burn off some more energy along the Viking Wildplay trail before you make the journey back to the car.

Watch over them as they build shelters with sticks and conquer the timber play structures.

You’ll want to keep experiencing the feel-good atmosphere at Hamsterley Forest. School holidays and weekends will be fully booked for years to come.
