Explore the centre of Coventry’s rich history

A literal stone’s throw away from the city’s historic cathedral is where you’ll find Herbert Art Gallery & Museum.

The modern exterior, which stands out from its neighbour’s traditional architecture, will immediately draw you in as you begin an adventure full of steep history and inspirational artwork.

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum is named after a local industrialist who donated £100,000 to the city in 1938 to build the gallery.

Marvellous exhibitions

You won’t miss the impressive bust of Sir Alfred Herbert displayed outside the History Gallery, which is where we think you should start first.

From the medieval City of Spires exhibition to a step back in time at Coventry during World War II, the History Gallery will transport you to some critical moments that shaped the city.

This includes Coventry’s rise in influence during Queen Victoria’s reign with its ribbon weaving and watchmaking industries.

There’s even an opportunity to book a tour of the medieval Undercroft and the Old Grammar School.

It’s thought Queen Elizabeth I made a visit here in August 1565 and made a donation to help keep the school running.

Time for a lovely cuppa

A cosy hot chocolate and a hearty sandwich from Albert’s Café is the perfect way to break up the day.

If it’s sunny, grab a table outside and enjoy the sunshine before it’s time to take in some classic and contemporary artworks.

The collection on the story of Lady Godiva painted by various Victorian artists holds a special place in the gallery.

You’ll also want to take a look at the fashions from 1800 to the 1970s on display.

There’s even a collection of toys and games also dating back to 1800, and the stunning watercolour paintings will simply take your breath away.
