Celebrate the festive season with world-class musicians and timeless Baroque masterpieces by candlelight
Tonight’s programme celebrates Christmas through the elegance and brilliance of the Baroque era, with a selection of beautifully crafted festive masterpieces performed in the stunning surroundings of Chelmsford Cathedral.
Opening the programme is Handel’s Overture to Messiah, one of the defining sounds of the Christmas season. Centred on the prophecy and birth of Christ, it remains one of the most beloved works in the festive classical repertoire.
Alongside this, Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, written “for the night of Christmas”, and Torelli’s Christmas Concerto capture the spirit of Christmas through music that evokes the shepherds of the Nativity and the peaceful stillness of the season.
The concert culminates with Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, one of the most famous and enduring masterpieces in classical music. Across four extraordinary violin concertos, Vivaldi paints vivid scenes from nature, bringing birdsong, harvest celebrations, dramatic storms and winter landscapes brilliantly to life.
