The Gateway to Old Newcastle
Visit the family-friendly and historic Newcastle Castle and walk in the steps of people who have lived and died in the shadow of its imposing walls.
Steeped in history, this imposing Norman fortress in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, is a rugged reminder of northern England's turbulent history.
This was no baron's stately home. Newcastle Castle is a grim reminder of royal authority where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed.
It's where the story of Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and has the most commanding views over the city and the River Tyne.
A great visit no matter the weather, easily reachable by car, bike, rail and public transport.
Good to know:
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
While the Black Gate is fully accessible, the Castle Keep has many steep stairs and uneven surfaces.
If you are booking the 15:30 starting time slot we'd recommend visiting the Black Gate building first, which closes at 16:30. You'll have tons of time to look around the Castle Keep after which closes at 17:00.
