Built as a private holiday home for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Osborne was a place for family life, entertaining guests and escaping royal duties. Today, many of the rooms remain just as they were, offering an intimate look at how the royal family lived.

Is Osborne wheelchair accessible?

Yes, Osborne is wheelchair-accessible, but some areas have limited or no wheelchair-access. Wheelchair loan is subject to availability.

House:

  • Manual wheelchairs are available to borrow on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Mobility scooters are only permitted in the ground floor of the house, due to the narrow corridors on the first floor. Visitors may visit the first floor by transferring to a manual wheelchair.
  • Queen Victoria's Private Apartments are accessible via a lift to the first floor, opposite the Council Room. There may be occasions when wheelchair access to the first floor is not available.
  • The Nursery is not accessible to wheelchairs.
  • Mobility assistance vehicle from admissions centre to the Swiss Cottage and Queen Victoria's Beach (Apr-Nov only). The Swiss Cottage and Museum is accessible to wheelchair users.

Gardens and Grounds:

  • The gardens and grounds are accessible using tarmac and impacted gravel paths.
  • The Walled Garden and Swiss Cottage Garden are heavily gravelled and may be difficult for wheelchair users.
  • The Rhododendron Walk is suitable for robust wheelchairs only.
  • Queen Victoria's Beach paths, café and Queen Victoria's Alcove are all accessible, however there are two steps up to the beach boardwalk.
  • The beach itself is not accessible to wheelchair or pushchair users.
How long does it take to tour Osborne?

Many people spend around half a day touring Osborne, but you are welcome to spend as long or as little there as you like. 

Is Osborne dog-friendly?

Dogs are allowed onto the site of Osborne, but they are allowed on the Grounds only. 

  • Dogs must be kept on leads
  • Please note: During the Summer months, there isn't much shade
