Wealth, consequences & one defence that changes everything
Set among the extreme wealth of the Hamptons, Affluenza begins after a teenager's drunken car ride ends in devastation. As the consequences move from the road to the courtroom, the case raises a deeply uncomfortable question: can someone be too affluent to understand right from wrong?
Inspired by true events surrounding a controversial legal defence, the play digs into moral accountability, family legacy and the American justice system. It's not just about one teenager's actions, but about the people and systems around him, and what happens when privilege is passed down alongside wealth.
Noah Schnapp, best known as Will Byers in Stranger Things, makes his stage debut alongside Janette Manrara, Juliet Cowan, Wallis Currie-Wood, Donald Sage Mackay and Rupert Young. Writer and director Andy Sandberg leads the world premiere as the first production in Riverside Studios' new Mainstage 26/27 season.
Affluenza doesn't hand you a neat answer and send you home. Instead, it puts privilege, justice and personal responsibility under the spotlight and leaves you to decide where accountability really begins.
Book Affluenza tickets at Riverside Studios and see this provocative world premiere before it ends on 28th November.
