Premiered in Turin in 1896 and first seen at Covent Garden the following year, La bohème is inspired by Henri Murger’s tales of bohemian life. It has since become one of the world’s most beloved operas—and the most frequently performed at the Royal Opera House. Tender, humorous and profoundly moving, La bohème remains the perfect opera for first-time audiences and lifelong fans alike.

About La boheme

When Rodolfo, a struggling poet, meets Mimì, a young seamstress, the connection is instant. He soon introduces her to his circle of bohemian friends, Marcello, Colline and Schaunard, and together they head out to the lively Café Momus, where Marcello unexpectedly reunites with his former lover, the dazzling Musetta.

But the joy of new love and friendship is shadowed by hardship. As winter tightens its grip on Paris, Rodolfo discovers that Mimì is gravely ill, placing their fragile happiness under strain. Can the warmth of friendship—and the power of first love, carry them through poverty, jealousy and loss?

Set in Paris at a moment of change, Puccini’s La bohème is a deeply moving portrait of youthful dreams, love found and love lost. Richard Jones’ much-loved production returns, capturing both the excitement of a modernising city and the intimate lives of its hopeful, struggling artists.
