Laurent Pelly’s exuberant production returns in this lively revival of Donizetti’s much-loved comic opera, conducted by Yves Abel. Juan Diego Flórez and Jonah Hoskins share the role of the devoted Tonio, alongside Sara Blanch, who makes her Royal Opera debut as the spirited heroine, Marie.
About La Fille du regiment
Found as a baby on a battlefield, the fearless and independent Marie has been brought up by the soldiers of the 21st regiment. Her devoted father figure, Sergeant Sulpice, insists she should marry one of their own. Enter Tonio, a young Tyrolean peasant who promptly enlists in the regiment in order to win Marie’s heart.
Just as their romance begins to blossom, the arrival of the Marquise de Berkenfield uncovers a long-hidden secret from Marie’s past—one that threatens to derail her plans for happiness. As loyalties are tested and surprises unfold, the question remains: can love triumph in the end?
