About Seagull: True Story

When Kon’s bold reinterpretation of Chekhov’s The Seagull is silenced by the wave of censorship following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, his once-vibrant production is reduced to a hollow, state-approved version.

Determined to preserve his artistic vision, Kon escapes to New York, where he grapples with the clash between his Russian heritage and the disorienting freedom of the West. As he attempts to rebuild his identity and career, he learns that true artistic freedom demands more than just distance—it requires courage, reinvention, and sacrifice.

Inspired by real events, Seagull: True Story is a fearless and wildly imaginative theatrical journey, bursting with irreverent humour and comedic mayhem that makes the audience roar. Following a triumphant Off-Broadway run at La Mama, the production now lands in London!
