About Semele
South African soprano Pretty Yende stars as Semele, joined by Ben Bliss in his Royal Opera debut as the alluring yet ominous Jupiter. The cast also includes Brindley Sherratt, Carlo Vistoli, and Alice Coote, with Baroque expert Christian Curnyn conducting.
The opera’s most iconic aria, “Where’er you walk”, sung by Jupiter, evokes a serene paradise and remains a favorite at weddings and funerals. Its lyrics, drawn from Alexander Pope’s Pastorals, highlight the opera’s lyrical beauty.
Unusually sensual for its time—especially during Lent—Semele defies expectations with its mythological heroine who embraces her desires. Arias like “Endless pleasure, endless love” and “Myself I shall adore” celebrate her passion. However, her joy is short-lived, as she is deceived by Juno into demanding to see Jupiter in his divine form, leading to her tragic end.
