Shakespeare’s Globe unleashes a powerful new staging of his landmark anti‑war drama Mother Courage and Her Children
In a world torn apart by endless conflict, where hope is scarce and survival is an everyday negotiation, Mother Courage drags her battered cart through the wreckage — part hustler, part survivor, all mother.
About Mother Courage and Her Children
She’s mastered the brutal economics of war, selling whatever scraps humanity hasn’t already claimed. Every battle brings a little profit… and another painful loss. With each deal struck, the cost grows heavier — until war demands the one thing she can’t afford to lose.
This vivid, contemporary retelling is packed with live music, sharp humour and fierce political bite, brought to life in a gripping new translation by Anna Jordan and directed by Globe Associate Artist Elle While. The production tackles burning questions of survival, capitalism and complicity with unflinching clarity.
Leading the charge is Globe Artistic Director Michelle Terry, taking on one of theatre’s most formidable and complex female roles. Set within a hedonistic, pulsing world, this production transforms the Globe into a living, breathing battleground charged with fury, grit, empathy — and rebellion disguised as joy.
