Standing beside the River Severn, a mass of high brick walls and barred windows, Shrewsbury Prison has been drawing in curious visitors for nearly a decade.
The old prison below the Victorian building you see today dates back to the Georgian era and was home to all sorts of criminals before it was decommissioned in 2013.
How will you choose to explore?
Now, it’s open for the public to explore. Whether you choose to head out on a Self-Guided or Guided Tour, you can be sure to expect a few things.
The atmosphere throughout the prison is completely unique. Thousands of troubled souls have been locked up in rooms that are now open for you to explore; corridors and courtyards you have the freedom to wander were once the only escape from cells prisoners would’ve had.
On the Guided Tour, with an Prison Officer keeping you company, you’ll get to hear first-hand stories about what prison life was like.
Your guide will take you into different areas of the prison, each filled with their own stories. Perhaps most notable of them all is the Executioners Bedroom, where men sentenced to hang stayed the night before their execution.
Spooks and scares
There’s nothing truly like wandering the halls of the prison. A mix of emotions and feelings are constantly rising to the surface before being replaced by others.
If you choose to head out on either the Ghost Tour, all those feelings are further heightened.
Rumoured to be the Second Most Haunted Jail in the World, the prison is a ghost hunter’s haven. In the midst of nightfall, you’ll be taken into the depths of the prison, where who knows what you might see.
Before the Victorian jail you see today came along, the site was home to a Georgian prison. Some of it still remains, and in the depths below Shrewsbury Prison you can see them for yourself.
