Discover the magic of the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd with two unique ways to meet Britain’s only free ranging reindeer

Nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is Britain’s only free-ranging reindeer herd. These gentle, friendly animals roam the Cairngorm mountains for most of the year, but during the festive season, visitors have two enchanting ways to meet them: Paddock Visits and Hill Trips.

Christmas Fun in The Paddocks

• Dates: 6th – 7th December, 13th – 14th December, and 20th – 24th December 2025
• Opening Hours: 10am – 4:30pm on weekends in December

During select December dates, a small group of reindeer will be on display in the Paddock area, offering a magical and accessible way to experience the herd. You can expect:

• 4–6 beautiful reindeer in a festive outdoor setting
• Santa appearances throughout the day, with sweet treats for well-behaved guests
• Knowledgeable herders sharing fascinating insights about the animals
• A hands-off experience — while visitors can get close, reindeer are not to be petted or hand-fed
• Please note: The Paddock area is outdoors with no shelter, so warm, waterproof clothing is essential

Hill Trips: Reindeer in their natural habitat

• Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
• Fitness Level: Moderate — includes a 20–40 minute walk on rough terrain
• Footwear & Clothing: Wellies or hiking boots, waterproof jacket, and warm layers required

For a truly immersive experience, you can join a Hill Trip to meet the reindeer in their mountain home. After a short drive (in your own vehicle), embark on a guided walk to the herd’s location. Once there, you’ll be:

• Surrounded by the free-ranging herd, often within a metre of the animals
• Guided by expert herders, who share stories and facts about the reindeer
• Able to take photos and enjoy a brief hand-feeding session
• Encouraged to respect the reindeer’s space — no petting, please!
• Safety is paramount: Please arrive properly dressed or risk being turned away without refund. The terrain can be muddy, icy, or snowy depending on the season
