"A moving tale of family love and courage"
When a death in the family brings them together, Shirley and Dwight reflect on their upbringing in Chapeltown, Leeds but both seem to remember their experiences very differently.
As discrimination and racism reached their peak, police brutality was terrorising the streets and poverty was rife in the North, everyday life became a struggle to get by for a black family. Dwight in particular, who was coming to terms with his autism, faced particular difficulty in trying to adapt to a society that would refuse to adapt to him. Meanwhile, Shirley was trying to become independent in the face of such intense discrimination as she struggled endlessly against her unfair expectations both at school and at home. Now both adults, the two must unite and leave their past behind and move into a more positive future together.
Nancy Medina directs this powerful and heartfelt adaptation of Zodwa Nyoni's drama in a sometimes heart-wrenching but ultimately moving insight into a struggle that sadly remains for so many today. Exploring the complexities and hardships of what it means to be part of a fractured family, this gripping drama will captivate and move theatre-goers everywhere.
