Discover an extraordinary monument in Welsh history
Stroll the stunning landscapes of North Wales listening to chirping birds and smelling the fresh scents of country life as you approach Ty Newydd Burial Chamber, on Anglesey.
The journey here will put you in a feel-good mood as you’re surrounded by precious wildlife on your way to this unique landmark.
Maybe you’d prefer to make this visit into a walking trail instead of driving straight to the chamber?
Pack your walking boots, leave the car at a pay and display in the quaint village of Rhosneigr, and hit the trail for the 43-minute hike through luscious green countryside.
What’s the story behind Ty Newydd Burial Chamber?
The four-metre layout of the chamber suggests it was created during the Neolithic (New Stone Age) and erected by an agricultural community.
Enter on the north-east side and gaze admiringly at the chamber's structure which uses four vertical stones and a large capstone as its ceiling.
This place has had a long working life with evidence from an excavation in the mid-1930s discovering pottery remains, and the later revelation of prehistoric ‘cup marks’ on the capstone.
Time for a spot of lunch at the local
We’re sure taking a walk around the magnificent chamber has started to make you feel peckish.
Take a wander back to the car and drive a short seven minutes to Y Goron, a delightful country pub with an outstanding menu to match. If you’re feeling something substantial, we recommend going for the steak and ale pie with a delicious sticky toffee pudding to finish.
Maybe you’re after something a bit lighter? The beetroot falafel bites paired with a cold beer are a tasty choice as you reminisce on the extraordinary history you’ve uncovered.
Perhaps your visit to Ty Newydd Burial Chamber is just one of many historical stops as you tour North Wales?
There are a number of beautiful country hotels and boutique guest houses to stay in – a room at the nearby Glan Neigr in Rhosneigr offers stunning seaside views and easy access to walking trails along the Anglesey Coastal Path.
Whether you visit Ty Newydd Burial Chamber with the family, a group of close friends, or as part of a solo expedition of North Wales, the steep history and breathtaking beauty surrounding this gem of Welsh history will entice you to keep coming back.
