Are dogs allowed at Ushaw?

Dogs are allowed to visit the gardens at Ushaw with some restrictions: Dogs on leads or under control at all times are allowed in the Bounds Café area and Ornamental Gardens. Dogs may be permitted off leads prior and after opening times or when the Bounds is empty. Dogs may be off leads in the Meadow. Dogs are welcome to the Gardens and Parkland, however they must remain on a lead in some areas. Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted inside the Main House & Chapels.

Are Ushaw's Grounds and Gardens wheelchair accessible?

There are Accessible Parking spaces next to the entrance with 24 hours access. There is also a wheelchair-friendly entrance to all buildings including chapels, tearoom, theatre and exhibition spaces. The Ornamental Gardens have pathways that are suitable for wheelchairs and other walking aides.

Welby’s Café is open 11am-3pm daily. Serving a selection of hot drinks, cakes, sandwiches, pastries & salad options.

Use postcode DH7 7DW when navigating with SatNav. This will take you to the main visitor entrance.

From the North:

Leave the A1(M) at junction 63, Chester-Le-Street. Continue south on the A167 until you reach Crossgate Moor on the outskirts of Durham. Turn right at the first set of traffic lights just past the pedestrian footbridge. Ushaw is signposted from here

From the South:

Leave the A1(M) at junction 59, north of Darlington, and continue north on the A167 (for approximately 14 miles) to the traffic lights at Neville’s Cross on the outskirts of Durham City. Continue to the third set of traffic lights by Sainsbury’s Local and turn left. Ushaw College is signposted here, 2 1/2 miles.

By train:

Ushaw is 10 minutes by taxi from Durham Rail Station.

By bus:

From Durham City bus station:

The Number 52 takes you direct to Ushaw’s main visitor entrance. It runs a limited timetable every 2.5hrs Monday to Saturday, daytime only with no service from early evening, or on a sunday at anytime.

The Arriva Number 48 stops at Bearpark (Aged Miners Homes) it’s then a 15-20 minute walk to Ushaw.
