From the Western Approaches Tactical Unit to the Dock Lane 1940s street recreation, each room reveals a new chapter of Liverpool’s critical wartime story. You’ll encounter original documents, equipment, and intelligence tools used to track enemy convoys and brief the British government, all while maintaining absolute secrecy. Among these artefacts is one of only two surviving wartime telephones with a direct line to the London War Cabinet!

The self-guided format gives visitors the freedom to explore hidden corridors, test out Morse code in the Radio Room, inspect original teleprinters, and step into one of only two surviving wartime phones directly linked to the London War Cabinet. Every detail encourages curiosity, discovery, and connection with the people who kept the Atlantic lifeline alive.

By Public Transport:

The museum is conveniently located within a short walking distance of two main underground train stations: Moorfields and James Street. Lime Street, the city’s mainline station, is approximately a 15‑minute walk away. The area is also well served by local bus routes, with both major bus stations - Queen Square and Liverpool One - situated less than half a mile from the museum. Additionally, the Pier Head ferry terminal is only a few minutes’ walk.

Visitors will also find themselves within easy walking distance of several major city attractions, including the 360 Liver Building Tour, Royal Albert Dock, The Beatles Story, The Mersey Tunnel Tour, and The Great British Music Experience.

Parking:

Pay‑and‑display parking, operated by NCP, is available directly on Rumford Street in front of the museum. Several additional car parks can also be found in the surrounding area.

Is the Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool wheelchair accessible?

Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of the building, the only way to access all areas of the building is via staircases. This means that visitors with mobility restrictions may be prevented from experiencing the whole museum.

There is a Pay and Display parking on Rumford Street, located in front of the building. 

There are also a number of accessible car parks nearby.
