Woodland adventures are hard to beat in our books.

The whole day is filled with excitement and wonder, from the moment you throw your walking boots onto the back seat and cram that last sandwich in your bag, you know you’re in for a day of fun.

Your destination is the next thing on the list, and we’ve already got that sorted.

The Forest of Bere and beyond

At the very southern edge of the South Downs National Park, the little hamlet of Wood End has sat under the watch of the woodland of the same name for as long as anyone can remember.

The wood makes up part of the ancient Forest of Bere, once the stomping ground of kings and royalty.

A marvellously diverse environment, the area ranges from woodlands covered in dense canopies where streams cut through the earth, to open farmland and picturesque villages.

Waymarked trails aren’t a thing at Woodend, leaving you in charge of where your adventure takes you.

Wander down trails with no names and take a detour across the forest floor, brushing your hand through the deep green needles of conifers along the way.

Best keep a map tucked away in the back pocket, just in case.

Picnicking or dining out?

Remember those sandwiches we were on about earlier? Picnic tables can be found all around Woodend, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to power back up after all that exploring.

If you’re looking to be wined and dined, however, there’s an option for that too.

After your adventure around the wood comes to an end, why not head into town and take a seat at the Bold Forester?

Sip on a craft ale or sample one of their fine wines in the sunshine. Check out the menu and order something for the table to peck on before the mains arrive.

The best of both worlds

Sharing delicious food in the company of people you care about after an outdoor adventure - what better way to pass the time?

Remarkably at Woodend, you get to experience both. Now that sounds like an adventure we could all do with from time to time.
