Abbeyford Woods

Is there anything more peaceful than a stroll through the local woods, admiring the giant trees swaying in the wind above you, while you listen to the birds singing and the sun beaming down through the cracks in the leaves?

If this sounds like your idea of a wonderful day out, then Abbeyford Woods is the perfect place for you to visit.

With a walking trail to enjoy, we're sure the whole family will create beautiful memories of fun and adventure on your walk here.

Abbeyford Woods

Just north of Okehampton is where you’ll find Abbeyford Woods. With free parking helping to make this a cheap day out, this is bound to become a regular trip.

Maybe you’re excited to experience a solo walk and connect with nature in peaceful surroundings. Or perhaps you’re bringing the whole family to explore the beautiful area.

Your four-legged friend can join in too. They’ll have as much fun as the rest of the family as they explore the area, tail wagging at the excitement of new surroundings and smells.

Experience beautiful wildlife on your walk along the Tarka Trail

While you're there, be sure to walk along part of the 180-mile Tarka Trail, which passes through the woods. You'll be mesmerised as you follow the River Okement, with its crystal-clear water.

All year round, the evergreen Douglas fir trees fill the skies above you and in autumn, the gold beech trees look glorious!

Keep an eye out for roe and red deer galloping through the trees as this place is full of wildlife. If you’re a bird watcher, there are buzzards, nightjars, and even pied flycatchers to spot, so be sure to bring your binoculars with you.

Time to tuck in

With picnic tables in the woods, you can enjoy a flask of hot coffee, or maybe some ice-cold water and take in the beautiful sights and sounds.

Bring a delicious sandwich and homemade cake to really make the most of your day out.

We're sure once you’re sat down in the peaceful area, you'll be in no rush to get back home!
