Donmar Warehouse has built its reputation by doing things a little differently. With an auditorium of around 250 seats, performances feel immediate and close-up, whether you're watching a brand-new play, a reimagined classic or a stripped-back musical.
The theatre's history goes back to a former brewery building that was later used as a rehearsal space before becoming a Royal Shakespeare Company venue in 1977. It became an independent producing house in 1992 under Sam Mendes and has since staged celebrated productions including Cabaret, The Blue Room, Othello, The Glass Menagerie and Next to Normal.
The programme keeps changing, but the Donmar's approach stays refreshingly ambitious: bring brilliant artists and audiences together in a space where you're never far from the performance. That's a pretty good recipe for a night at the theatre.
