About Carmen

Don José is a soldier with a steady life — until he meets Carmen. She’s magnetic, fearless, and impossible to resist. But what begins as infatuation quickly spirals into obsession. When Carmen’s heart shifts toward the charismatic bullfighter Escamillo, jealousy ignites, and Don José’s world unravels.

This is no fairytale romance — it’s a collision course with tragedy.

Set against the backdrop of 1970s Spain during the final days of Franco’s dictatorship, this bold staging — originally directed by Calixto Bieito — strips away the romantic gloss to reveal the raw, political undercurrents of the story. Expect sun-scorched landscapes, simmering tension, and a visual style as provocative as the plot.

Bizet’s score is a masterclass in melody and drama. From the sultry swagger of the “Habanera” to the bravado of the Toreador Song, every note pulses with life.

With more instantly recognisable tunes than any other opera, Carmen is a thrilling ride from first note to final curtain.
