A remarkable past

With its magnificent towers and empty arches, Kenilworth Castle rises up against the Warwickshire skyline with a dramatic charm and grace.

The past often feels like a time long ago that’s separate from the world we live in today. Yet when you arrive at Kenilworth Castle, that changes.

The moment you step inside its 900-year-old walls, the past confronts you in every direction you turn. From between every crack seems to seep a story that stretches back centuries; around every corner a new wonder lies in wait to be found.

Throughout its long life, the castle has passed through many hands. But one in particular stands out above the rest.

Queen Elizabeth I gifted the castle to Robert Dudley in the 16th-century and visited him a number of times. Her private chambers still remain to this day, open for you to explore.

A wander around the garden

On one of those visits, Dudley had a spectacular garden built for Elizabeth. Luckily for us all, an official snuck into the gardens and described them in detail – from which English Heritage used to recreate the garden.

Spare more time than you think you need to explore the garden. As soon as you take your first step down one of the pathways, time seems to get lost.

From the incredible fountain at its heart to the piercing obelisks dotted around – the whole area is a spectacle of the Elizabethan era.

So how about it? Ready to step back in time?

Must-know: The grounds of Kenilworth Castle are open but all indoor areas remain closed until 17 May.
