Highlights of The Music of Harry Potter
Performed by the acclaimed Mystery Ensemble, the evening’s programme brings to life the sweeping, emotional score that has defined a generation of wizarding fans. From soaring themes to delicate motifs, the music conjures the wonder, mystery, and adventure of Hogwarts and beyond.
The original soundtrack was composed by legendary maestro John Williams, whose work shaped the sonic identity of the Harry Potter universe. Written at his homes in Los Angeles and Tanglewood, and recorded at London’s famed Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst studios in September 2001, the score introduced audiences to iconic themes like “Hedwig’s Theme” — a melody that echoes through every film in the series.
Many of Williams’ musical ideas were carried into Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, creating a rich tapestry of recurring motifs that deepen the emotional resonance of the story.
The soundtrack’s impact was immediate: released on 30 October 2001, it quickly earned gold certification in Canada and Japan, and in 2002, Williams received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. Though the award ultimately went to Howard Shore for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, both soundtracks remain cornerstones of modern fantasy cinema — and both are celebrated in our concert series.
