Tiverton's Museum of Mid Devon Life tells the stories behind some incredible people and artefacts as well as their significance to the region.

Highlights at Tiverton Museum

  • Did you know that lace-making and brewing are two of the most historically important professions in the Mid-Devon region? Well now you can learn all about it with some brilliant displays.
  • You’ll also find old bicycles, clothing, farming equipment, cars and a water wheel that really put you into the shoes (or farm boots!) of an old-fashioned farmer going about your daily business without a care at all for the digital world of today.
  • By far the most famous attraction of all in the Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life is the “Tivvy Bumper” Great Western Railway steam engine. This 1442 locomotive ran daily from 1884 to 1964 and connected Tiverton to the rest of Devon via its breakthrough railway system.
  • In 1978, it was moved from the town into the museum where it remains to this day and is beloved by both the locals and visitors alike. It’s the ultimate must-see sight in a museum full of must-see sights.
  • You can even have a go at pulling the whistle when you walk by on the footplate!
