Why do we celebrate World Oceans Day?

Happy World Oceans Day!

Whether we live on the coast, on an island, or plonked right in the middle of a vast continent, the oceans connect us all and as we celebrate together this important day, it's time to take responsibility for the wellbeing of our oceans.

Oceans are pretty awesome. They feed billions of people, they regulate the climate, absorb carbon and give back oxygen, and they are home to a truly amazing and diverse spectrum of life.

Which is why we need to protect them.

What's it like, the big blue?

Well, the truth is, we still don't know. The human race has learned lots over the years, particularly during the last century thanks to advancements in technology, and yet a crazy 80% of the Earth's oceans have yet to be explored or even seen by the human eye.

Maybe that's why we're so fascinated by the big blue. For all we know about it, there's still so much we don't.

Which is why experiences that help us feel connected to our oceans are so important. They help us learn, discover, and understand such a crucial element of the planet we all live on and share.

How can I learn more about the ocean?

There are so many amazing organisations out there who are helping us feel connected: United Nations, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and so many more, all raising awareness and helping us all take responsibility for the ocean.

And let's not forget about the incredible attractions out there. From their conservation work, to the passionate and fascinating experiences they provide, all doing their bit to bring us all closer to our oceans.

We've cherry-picked a few of the UK's best ocean-based experiences so we can all celebrate World Oceans Day and feel that much closer to the life and mystery under the sea, and most importantly, learn a little about how we can help.
